“I am learning like a boss!”
When you think about it, executive functioning skills are ingrained in everything we do. When you need to clean or tidy a room, you use a variety of skills all at once. You need organisational skills to help you figure out where things go, time management skills to work efficiently, self-control to help you stay with it when you want to watch Youtube instead, and task initiation skills to get started in the first place.
Executive functioning skills (EFS) are a set of neurological processes that help your child manage themselves and their resources so that they achieve their goals. And EFS aren’t simply an ‘added extra’ at Summit Point. They are the critical foundation that allows your child to be successful in the classroom and beyond.
So, these skills are taught explicitly every week in every class as part of Summit Point’s Social and Emotional Curriculum. Students complete a questionnaire about their own profile, as do families and teachers, to triangulate the results. These results then underpin your child’s goals and Daily Intentions, and help redirect conversations when they need support.
Starting with Working Memory, exploring Impulse and Emotional Control, finding out what motivates us, and developing our focus, our kids create their own dinosaurs for each executive functioning skill... complete with the ‘super strategies’ they need to succeed. Such fun!!
See our Resources Page for an even deeper dive into understanding Executive Functioning.
